Craig Rivet Named Sabres 2008-2009 Captain by pinkjerseyssuck

We haven't had time to take his picture yet

No Picture Yet

Even though Craig Rivet has yet to play a regular season game with the Sabres, he has been named this year’s team captain. Ruff said this morning that there will be no rotating captain this year, so Rivet is it til June. (Yeah, I said June.)

Yes, Rivet is an awesome player. Yes, he’s racked up almost 200 (35 last year) points as a defenseman. But come on, the guy’s probably still dipping his wings in ranch dressing. Can we get him accustomed to life and play in Buffalo first?

Apparently the boys on the team actually had a say in the captain choice, according to Ruff. So I can’t whine too much about it. But it still seems odd to me that the Sabres chose a captain who hasn’t actually played on our team yet. I’m sure there’s reasons (a more defensive strategy this year, his age/experience, etc) but then maybe rotating captains again this year would have been a good idea.

Either way, in the end I’m not going to question the judgment of Lindy Ruff. The man is way too awesome for me to doubt. So now all we can do is anxiously await who the “A” will adorn this year.

Jason Pominville, Teppo Numminen, Jaroslav Spacek and Jochen Hecht were named alternates. Ruff said two will serve at home, two on the road.

They’re just trying to make him happy because he wasn’t too pleased about being shuffled off to Buffalo.
